5 Tips to Create a Pretty Desk Area

by Aoife Ní Dhonghaile

Desk areas can be a place of dread and doom… working or studying tirelessly to beat that deadline. But they don’t have to be! We have 5 Tips to instantly brighten up your desk area and create a comfortable workplace. You’ll be looking forward to sitting down and getting organized!

1. Functional & Appealing

The process begins when choosing your desk. Know how much space you require and will have to work with. Consider the storage space capacities when choosing your desk to make sure you maximize the efficiency of the space. You want to be able to find what you want quickly, perform tasks aptly and return everything to their allocated place with ease. Lighting is also important so add a table lamp to your layout. A stack of magazines or even a few of your most played CDs (or am I the only one that still buys CDs?!) can double as a shelf for the lamp.

2. Avoid Clutter
However you choose to accessorise your workspace be sure to minimise clutter. Aim to keep the accessories to the side or in corner of your desk. Add a simple corkboard to hang above your computer screen for extra space. You can decorate it nicely and they are highly functional.

3. Colour

Throughout my years of study I used colour endlessly and swear by them! I like to take a lot of notes so colour coding my thoughts proved helpful when searching back through the paperwork to find what I needed. Colourful pens, folders and printed notebooks all add personality and can liven up a boring workspace. There are lots of inexpensive and varied designs available these days you are bound to come across one that calls to you. -Whether it’s Deadpool, Elsa or travel inspired! They add an element of fun which adds to the likelihood of actually getting organised.

4. Laptop Skin

This tip is particularly useful for those seeking to brighten their desk space in work. Again, there are plentiful options so choose which one speaks to your personality the most. You can peel the skins on and off without causing any damage.

5. Inspiration and a Personal Touch

You’ll most likely be using this area daily so add some personal touches such as photographs or artwork that makes you happy. Use items that inspire your creativity and can feed you energy to keep your workload manageable and in perspective. You can also use inspirational quotes to keep you motivated. Try changing them up every so often so they stay impactful to you.

I love travelling so I fashioned a bunting to hang above my desk, made from post cards I’ve collected from around the world. I have notes written on the back of each one outlining the highlights of the trip, which is a happy reminder and keeps me motivated to get my work done so I can start to plan my next adventure!
